Listen closely: It doesn’t matter if your American, Australian, English, or any country really, because your government has money for your education. In today’s post we are going to cover a broad overview of how you can take advantage of money that is literally waiting for you to claim.
Most countries will use taxes to help fun future generations education. So before you decide to pay for school all by yourself, it would be prudent of you to take a look and see what programs are available.
Now I know that some countries may not have the best programs for education but one country that does for sure is the United States. I am speaking from experience because as a foreigner, I was able to get grant money from a country that was not my own. Pretty cool right?
The sad thing is, many Americans are not taking advantage of the free money that is right in front of them.
There is a bit of a process when applying but if a small amount of my time and effort is the only price I will have to pay in order to get a free ride — then so be it!
Federal And State Grants
As I stated before, make sure to look into both your federal and state funding opportunities before you throw in the towel and come out of pocket. That would be foolish especially since we haven’t finished the article yet (I have something cool to show you next).
The process for federal and state funding was probably as easy as getting a license to fish or hunt. There was some paperwork and some time that you had to wait in order for everything to process. It was very simple especially since I had help.
The key here is to seek out a guidance or career counselor at your local school. Most reputable schools will have a whole department dedicated to getting your schooling paid for by the government. They do this because it means more money in their pocket when you enroll. So it is to their benefit to have people on stand-by that are ready to get you enrolled.
The career counselor will most likely know of 90% of the government funding opportunities that will be available for your design major. They will also have materials and references on where to get even more money! Those references might include private grants.
In the United States especially, there are thousands upon thousands of grants available to people for the oddest reasons. I was flipping through a book of private grant organizations and students could get free money for being a certain ethnicity, having a certain color hair, for being part of an association, for having a family history of disease, and countless of others.
There was literally thousands of different categories of grants that anyone could take advantage of by simply applying. As long as you fit their criteria, you would have a great chance at winning the grant money.
These grants were the easiest to apply for and I recommend you take a look for yourself. I believe they have a form you can fill out that will automatically find what grants you are qualified for. All you have to do is complete a simple questionnaire.
Understand Grant Terms
Probably the most important thing to remember is that for most grants and scholarships, there are strings attached. The foundations and private associations that are giving away this money require very little from you (for the most part). It can range from holding a certain GPA to maintaining a good standing in an association.
Terms vary from grant to grant to always make sure to read them very carefully because they can always suspend your tuition payments.
